Instrumentation for the competition

To clear up any confusion this is what will, or won’t be, allowed whilst flying tasks.

Flight loggers (MLRs) will be used to record all tasks.  These are compulsory and are loaned to you for the duration of the competition, but if you lose it you will have to pay £200 to replace the unit.  This helps us to score the tasks more quickly and easily, and helps to resolve any disputes as to whether or not you (for example) made a turn point.  You need to provide the AA batteries for the units. It is advisable to have several sets with you as you need to fly with fully charged batteries to avoid losing your data, as happens when the batteries fail.  This is the pilot’s responsibility.

Quest! XC will be permitted.  However this may NOT be used in conjunction with a GPS.

All competitors must have an altimeter. Varios may be used. Compasses and stopwatches may be of significant advantage.

A backup GPS is permitted but this has to be securely sealed and signed by a marshal prior to take off (the marshal will record that a backup GPS is being used).  This can be a good backup if the MLR should fail during a flight, and would then be considered as `evidence' by the Competition Director when scoring your task. If flying with a sealed GPS then you MUST submit the still sealed backup GPS with your official logger at the end of the task. If the backup GPS is not submitted (or has been tampered with) then you may score zero. You will also score zero if you carry a GPS which has not been sealed by a marshal. The management of backup GPSs is the sole responsibility of the individual pilot.

Please ensure that your backup GPS is clearly marked with your name and competitor number so that it can be returned to you (your competitor number will be confirmed at registration).
