The Johan Bossuyt Trophy
‘live to fly’

When Johan Bossuyt died in a tragic accident early in 2006 he left a void in the paramotoring world.  This very popular Belgian pilot was known throughout Europe and further afield for his consummate flying skills, for his enthusiasm and energy for the sport, and also for his generosity to all pilots everywhere.  Johan always had time for everyone, helping them with their engines, explaining the finer skills of flying and generally being a great all round guy.  With his lovely wife Veerle (Vee), and three children, they took their familiar white van round to many of the European flying events making numerous friends wherever they went.  No-one was more popular than Johan.

The news of his death devastated many, not least of all his beloved Vee and their young children.  As a mark of respect many British pilots clubbed together and made a collection to show their support.  Some of the funds have now been used to produce a special trophy with the aim of keeping the memory of Johan in perpetuity.

The Johan Bossuyt Trophy will be presented annually at the UK Paramotoring Championships.  When trying to decide just what this trophy should be presented for it was decided that the most wonderful thing about Johan was his generosity of spirit of giving to others within the paramotoring community.  It therefore seemed appropriate that the Trophy should be presented annually to an individual who emulated that philosophy. Someone who gives generously of their time and energy to the development and promotion of the sport, and for the benefit of the UK Pilots.

At this years 2006 Championships we are hoping that Vee will be with us to enjoy the event and to present the Johan Trophy to the first recipient.  A replica of the trophy will also be presented to Vee for her to keep. We do hope that you can be there to join with us in this presentation.

The trophy is not the domain of the UK Paramotor Committee’s giving, but much more from the group of pilots and friends who wished to remember a very special pilot and friend - Johan Bossuyt.

At the time of his death one pilot was moved to put the following poem up on the PPGClub forum, this really does seem so perfect:

High Flight

Oh!  I have slipped the surely bonds on earth
and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
you have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
high in the sunlit silence.  Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
my eager craft thro’ footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
where never lark, not even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
the high, untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Pilot officer - John Gillespie Magee
