News release: 10 May, Syangboche

We moved up to Syangboche today. Glorious views of Everest on the way up, with a terrific lenticular cloud on top, indicating very strong winds at high level. Good tow takeoff at Lukla, Angelo released some 1500ft over Syangboche, drifted rather far down the runway into the rough bit but landed OK.

Angelo has been in contact with some people at North side base camp, and apparently there has been 40 m/sec + winds at advanced base camp which is only 6400m. Many tents destroyed Etc. and everybody has moved down to Base camp. We met someone on the way down from South side base camp yesterday who reported similar conditions there. Apparently the consensus ar the moment is that the jet stream will linger in this area for at least another 7 days before moving off.

We checked the pressure of our 4 oxygen bottles yesterday, only 180 bar, we filled them to 200 but filling them from empty makes them hot. Now ambient, the pressure had dropped significantly to 180 bar (they have not leaked) so we pumped them up to 200 again using the Paramina super pump.

Anyway, we are at Syangboche. Barty and all the rest of the team plus all our kit are on their way here and should arrive sometime tomorrow afternoon.

We will have to see a national parks man before we set to fixing up the runway here. It is not a huge job, we just need to fill some holes about 100m from the start point, we will be using the extreme left (uphill) side of the strip as it is generally in the best condition.

My computer is making a nasty noise, so how long these reports will continue is anyone's guess, although the photographers have a computer which I suppose we could use.
