It’s that time of year again!

This year, we’re moving to Northrepps Aerodrome in North-East Norfolk for the 2008 UK National Paramotor Championships from 31 May – 3 June. This has become the principal annual competitive event for paramotor pilots in the UK and last year, attracted the largest ever field of over 60 pilots, 11 of whom were guest pilots from overseas.

The Competitions Committee has been working since November to make sure that the 2008 Championships will be a great event for everyone, whether competing, spectating or marshalling. This is a beautiful part of the country, so all we need is the weather! The format will be similar to the 2007 event with families and visitors very welcome.

As usual, there’ll be camping onsite with toilets and showers. For those thinking of bringing the family or adding the comp onto a holiday, local attractions include fantastic beaches, stately homes and amusement parks.

We’ll have a local caterer, Carl Hughes, on site throughout the comp serving up a variety of good food at very reasonable prices, so forget the Camping Gaz and eat with everyone else in the main marquee! The menu is likely to include cooked breakfasts, lasagne, curry and if we want it, a hog roast! More details in due course…(Please bring your own cutlery and crockery if you want to use real as it looks like the caterer will be using disposable)

Our Competition Director for the last two years, Paul Mahony, is leaving our shores to work with Gerry Breen at his Algarve Airsports Centre in Portugal, adding paramotoring to the list of courses. We thank Paul for his hard work over the last two years and wish him the best of luck in Portugal.

Taking over from Paul as Competition Director is Andy Phillips, who’s competed in 5 of the last 6 UK Nationals and has also been on the Competitions Committee for the last two years.

Andy says: I’m keen to continue the mantra of SAFE, FAIR SIMPLE & FUN and hope to attract more new converts to the competition. We’ve set the minimum qualifying airtime at 30 hours this year, but we’re really just saying that you shouldn’t be coming straight from your course into the comp and that we’d rather you get a few hours under your belt before you put yourself in this new environment.

Following feedback from pilots attending last years Nats, I aim to give aspiring British Team pilots some optional task elements to test some of the more technical aspects a competition, particularly on Nav Tasks. However I should stress 'optional' so if you didn't want to take up the extra challenge then you don't have to!

I also plan to encourage buddying and will do my best to allow time for the more experienced comp pilots to share their knowledge with those of you new to competition. If registration goes well, I may even consider pairing up ahead of the competition so that you can get to know each other and start learning the tricks!

The British Team did a fantastic job winning the Silver Medal in China in the World Championships last September and one of the main reasons for National Championships is to raise the standard and be able to select the best team for the next FAI Championships. This year, it’s the European Championships in Poland in August, so anyone aspiring to make the team for Poland should look out for posts on the PPG forum from Michel Carnet who’s been appointed the Team Leader for 2008.

We’ll be using the Comps forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PPGCompsUK/ for Q&A before the Comp as well as a way of passing relevant information without clogging up the main PPG forum, so if you’ve not joined, now would be a good time!

We’ll be posting more information over the coming weeks, so keep this site bookmarked and look out for the updates. In the meantime, if you need to contact the Committee, you can do so at natsppgsecretary@live.co.uk .

We look forward to seeing you at the end of May.

Best regards,

Andy Philips

Chairman
