Welcome to the Foot Launched Microlights National Championships 2001 information site.

A GREAT SUCCESS! Most successful PPG nationals yet.

The event ran successfully from Saturday 12 May to Tuesday 15 May. The weather was variable but usually we were blessed with light winds.
 
There were 14 competitors, including three foreign nationals, and we ran 10 tasks. There was a good selection of precision, economy and navigation tasks (See menu for scores). Most competitors seemed to enjoy themselves.
 
As advertised, the The final pilot classification in the PPG class has been used as an important indicator for the selection of the British team to compete at the World Air Games 2001 in Andalucia 18 June - 1 July. The pilots concerned have been asked whether they would like to participate and must reply to rmh by Friday 18 May.
 
Michel Carnet is to be congratulated for retaining the title of National champion for a second year. The award of the trophy will be made at the BMAA's AGM in December.
 
Geoff Soden must also be congratulated for providing a great venue and for pursuading so many people that competing in these events isn't such a terrifying thing after all... and in fact can be quite fun! This time we really did have a competitive field and maybe at last there is genuine interest in PPG competitions. Hopefully next year's event will be even more popular!
 
Finally the overall winner, Guy Leon-Dufour from France, must be congratulated for showing everybody else how to do it.
 
 

The 2001 UK National PPG & PHG championships will be based at Alconbury near Huntingdon courtesy of Geoff Soden.

The World Air Games 2001 are in June which means this year's Nationals are unusually early in the season.

The final pilot classification in the PPG class will be an important indicator for the selection of the British team to compete at the World Air Games 2001 in Andalucia 18 June - 1 July (There is no PHG class this year.)

In these National Championships there will be 2 classes, PPG's and PHG's, in 2 separate competitions under 2 competition Directors.

  • PPG's: Richard Meredith-Hardy. Competition Director of 1997 UK nationals & World Air Games in Turkey, 1998 UK Nationals & World Cup in Hungary, 1999 UK National & World Championships in Hungary, 2000 UK & Spanish nationals & test WAG championships.
    Competitor (best UK performance) at the 2000 Europeans in France.
     
    RMH is also scheduled to be the director of the 2001 WAG PPG championships which will be in the form of a novel mobile championships 'to take flying to the people of Andalucia'.
  • PHG's: Ben Ashman and/or Paul Dewhurst. Multiple international microlight champions.

The entry fee will be £25 for all competing pilots. Any excess over costs will be donated to the BMAA team fund which helps towards the great expense of representing our country in international championships.

All PPG and PHG pilots are invited to come and fly at the event even if they do not wish to compete. There will be no entry fee for this but a donation to team funds would be welcome. There may be some flying restrictions for non-competitors while tasks are taking place.

No membership of any particular national organization is required to compete but for the safety of all concerned, 3rd Party insurance is mandatory.

Competing pilots should come equipped with the 1:50,000 Ordnance survey maps Nos. 142 & 153

A mandatory initial briefing for competing pilots will take place on the airfield at 08:00, 12 May. Pilots should expect to be ready to take off on the first task at 09:00.
